Plot should be the natural result of the characters reacting one upon the other, it is equally ineffective to have the plot a mere natural sequence of incidents. Such incidents may reveal your characters, but if they do not advance the plot a step further towards the crisis, if they do not lead to a big situation, they will be of no dramatic value. Just as some writers have given too much thought to situation, to the detriment of their characters and themes, so have others concen- trated entirely upon characters and have failed to tell a dramatic story. To provoke dramatic interest, there must be a Plot, and plot is dependent upon Situation.
